Hobart
Located at the foothills of Mt. Wellington and along Derwent River’s estuary in Tasmania, Hobart is the capital of the state of Tasmania and is Australia’s second oldest city (after Sydney); and is also the most populous city in Tasmania. The city is a combination of colonial charm, modern spiritedness and natural wonders.
As the southernmost capital city of Australia, Hobart sits on both sides of the Derwent River and experiences a temperate maritime climate. Mt. Wellington is often the site of snow in winter, although snow at other times of the year is not uncommon. The valley however, rarely sees any white, and at less than 6 hours a day of average winter sunshine, experiences the second lowest hours of sunshine in Australia (after Melbourne. However, more than 15 hours of sunshine during summer, amply compensates for lack in winter, making Hobart a sun-bathers haven.
Hobart has hit a record high of 40.8°C (105.4°F) and a low of −2.8°C (27.0°F) in the past, but since 30 years or more, has not witnessed a repeat of these extremes. Average high now hovers between 12°C and 21°C (53°F and 70°F) and average low between 5°C and 12°C (41°F and 53°F).
A seaport, Hobart is the hub of France and Australia’s Antarctic operations. It also welcomes about 40 cruises every month during summer, encouraging the city’s thriving tourist industry. Beach areas like the Sandy and Cornelian Bays, Nutgrove, Kingston, Howrah, and Bellerive Beaches and Seven Mile, Cremorne, Roaches, Goats, and Clifton Beaches in Frederick Henry Bay, including some in Derwent estuary, ensures a substantial number of tourists during summer.
In addition to sun and sand,
the Salamanca Place weekly market attracts a good share of visitors to
Hobart, as does the city’s cultural heritage, quaint suburban areas,
acclaimed bars and restaurants, and vibrant nightlife. Some places you must
visit during your stay in Hobart are:
- Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens
- Hobart Synagogue
- Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery
- Hobart Cenotaph or Hobart War Memorial
- Mount Wellington region
- Wrest Point Hotel Casino in Sandy Bay
- Elizabeth Street for popular restaurants
Hobart welcomes and accepts you with ready smiles. The city’s relaxed atmosphere and its people, the friendly Hobartians, are guaranteed to make your stay enjoyable and memorable. Enjoy Hobart!
